Auditing a class means that in essence you are taking the class over again - perhaps because you need a refresher, or maybe you just don't feel as connected to Reiki as you think you should be, or it could be even that you feel uncertain about what you have learned previously. There could be many reasons. There have been students who took the class from another teacher and did not feel truly comfortable with it, so they decided to come and audit with another Reiki Master. So, you would go through all the steps the other students go through, including the tests and the attunement.
Assisting is really that - you assist (help) the master. You arrive about half an hour prior to class and help set up, put symbols in the room, do what needs to be done before the other students get there. When they arrive, you help make them feel comfortable, answer some questions (perhaps). The assistant also participates in the class, though it is not necessary to register or go through the testing procedure on the symbols again. You would also receive the attunements again in each class unless it is a master class, where you may choose to observe the attunement process rather than be a recipient.
